How does a fire alarm system work?

Fire alarm systems (FAS) are indispensable components of preventive fire protection. They ensure that fires are detected at an early stage, people are warned in good time and protective measures are initiated automatically.

But how exactly does a fire alarm system work? In the following, we will give you an overview of how a fire alarm system works and how it is operated.

Fire alarm system: Function

A fire alarm system is made up of several central components that are closely interlinked. The heart of the system is the fire alarm control panel (FACP).  It acts as the central nervous system of the system, where all the information comes together, is analyzed and, if necessary, automatically triggers protective measures. Its four core competencies include

  • the collection of information by various sensors in the building,
  • internal alerting for the targeted evacuation of affected areas,
  • the automatic activation of preconfigured protective measures according to a fire matrix and
  • the external alerting of the fire department with precise initial information on the source of the fire and possible sources of danger.

This comprehensive functionality enables the emergency services to gain effective and safe access to the building in order to save lives and protect property.

The fire detectors themselves - whether smoke detectors, heat detectors or manual call points - are the sensory organs of the system and are used to detect fire characteristics. As soon as a detector detects an abnormality, this information is transmitted to the FACP.

Another important component is the signaling devices, which emit acoustic and visual warning signals in the event of an alarm to alert people in the building. There are also control devices that activate smoke extraction systems, close fire doors or switch off ventilation systems in the event of a fire in order to contain the spread of fire and smoke. In addition, an emergency power supply ensures that the system remains operational even in the event of a power failure.

How does a fire alarm system work in everyday life?

In normal operation, the fire alarm control panel continuously monitors the connected fire detectors.

As soon as a detector detects a sign of fire, such as smoke particles, extreme heat development or flames, a signal is sent to the control panel. This is where the actual functioning of the fire alarm system begins:

  1. Signal processing and alarming: The fire alarm control panel analyses the received signal to minimize false alarms (e.g. due to dust or water vapour). If the alarm is confirmed, the control panel immediately activates the signaling devices. These warn everyone in the building with acoustic (e.g. sirens) and visual (e.g. flashing lights) signals. Some systems may be programmed with a time delay to avoid false alarms.
  2. Notification of the fire department: Connected fire alarm systems are directly connected to the fire department control center. In the event of an alarm, the FACP automatically transmits a message so that the emergency services can leave immediately. In the case of non-connected systems (building alarm systems), notification must be made manually by the users of the building.
  3. Control of fire protection equipment: At the same time, the FACP controls other protective measures. These include closing fire doors, activating smoke extraction systems or switching off machines and ventilation systems. The aim here is to limit the spread of the fire and increase safety in the building.

Maintenance essential for functionality

The long-term, safe and standard-compliant functioning of a fire alarm system can only be guaranteed through regular inspections and maintenance. During these inspections, each sensor is tested for functionality and the entire alarm sequence chain is checked. This ensures that changes in the building are detected and necessary adjustments are made to the fire alarm system.
