Special solution of a dry extinguishing water pipe for the Elbe tunnel

The St. Pauli - Elbe Tunnel, which was opened in 1911, is a technical masterpiece. It was the first tunnel in Germany to pass under a river and connects the districts of St. Pauli and Steinwerder in Hamburg. With a length of 426 metres and a depth of 24 metres under the Elbe, the St. Pauli - Elbe Tunnel is a major infrastructure project. The operator, the Hamburg Port Authority, has been working on the renovation of the two tunnel tubes for 15 years, a task that constantly presents new challenges due to the age of the tunnel, the construction method and the protection of historical monuments.

The challenge of supplying extinguishing water in the tunnel

The supply of extinguishing water is a particularly critical issue. The tunnel had an old above-ground hydrant, but this could not be used efficiently due to the structural conditions. The fire brigade's rescue fire fighting vehicle (HLF) cannot be brought into the tunnel, so in the event of a fire, the fire brigade would be forced to lay a fire hose down a long, steep staircase into the tunnel. This is not only time-consuming, but also inefficient. In addition, the hydrant was still connected to the drinking water network, which should no longer be maintained in the course of the renovation.

Solution: Dry extinguishing water pipe

The aim of the project was to disconnect the hydrant from the drinking water network and provide the fire brigade with a faster and more efficient way of fighting fires. CWS Fire Safety's Bremen branch was entrusted with the task of finding a solution that would fulfil these requirements. The challenge was that the refurbishment of the tunnel was complicated by obstacles such as steel beams, monument protection and coordination with other trades. Nevertheless, CWS Fire Safety found a customised solution: a dry extinguishing water pipe was laid, which the fire brigade can use to supply water above ground at the respective entrance portal. This water is then available underground in the tunnel. In order to protect the listed building and due to the lack of building law requirements, an existing shaft was used in which other pipes also run. The riser was therefore not laid in accordance with DIN specifications, but this was not a problem in this case as it was a voluntary measure by the operator to increase safety in the tunnel.

"The planning presented us with a number of challenges, as not all the components of such an old building are documented. In addition, monument protection had to be taken into account. We are therefore all the more pleased that we were able to find a customised solution in this special case to provide a historically significant building with an effective extinguishing option in the event of a fire," says Björn Ellmers, Project Manager at CWS Fire Safety Bremen.

Result: Optimised firefighting

The measure considerably simplifies firefighting in the St. Pauli - Elbe Tunnel. Thanks to the new extinguishing water feed, an HLF can approach directly and feed in the water efficiently, which saves a considerable amount of time. In the event of a fire, an extinguishing water volume of up to 1,600 litres per minute can now be fed in - at both entrances to the tunnel. Another advantage is the protection of the historic tunnel structure. There is no longer any need to use a heavy, filled hose line down the stairs. This protects the tunnel from possible damage.

Impressive speed and efficiency

The extinguishing water pipeline, including the extinguishing water supply in both tunnel portals, was installed and put into operation in just 3.5 weeks. The Bremen team consisted of three technicians and a project manager, who worked together to successfully realise the project. The project manager from CWS FireSafety was regularly on site to ensure planning, construction meetings and quality assurance.
