The challenge of supplying extinguishing water in the tunnel

Solution: Dry extinguishing water pipe

The aim of the project was to disconnect the hydrant from the drinking water network and provide the fire brigade with a faster and more efficient way of fighting fires. CWS Fire Safety's Bremen branch was entrusted with the task of finding a solution that would fulfil these requirements. The challenge was that the refurbishment of the tunnel was complicated by obstacles such as steel beams, monument protection and coordination with other trades. Nevertheless, CWS Fire Safety found a customised solution: a dry extinguishing water pipe was laid, which the fire brigade can use to supply water above ground at the respective entrance portal. This water is then available underground in the tunnel. In order to protect the listed building and due to the lack of building law requirements, an existing shaft was used in which other pipes also run. The riser was therefore not laid in accordance with DIN specifications, but this was not a problem in this case as it was a voluntary measure by the operator to increase safety in the tunnel.
"The planning presented us with a number of challenges, as not all the components of such an old building are documented. In addition, monument protection had to be taken into account. We are therefore all the more pleased that we were able to find a customised solution in this special case to provide a historically significant building with an effective extinguishing option in the event of a fire," says Björn Ellmers, Project Manager at CWS Fire Safety Bremen.
