The fire alarm system (FAS) is a key element of fire protection systems. It is used for the early detection of fires and is individually tailored to the requirements and use of the respective building in order to be able to react quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency.

As a general rule, a fire alarm system is mandatory as soon as it is required in the building permit. This applies to new buildings as well as renovations or changes of use. In addition, a fire alarm system can also be stipulated by insurance companies as a requirement in order to guarantee insurance cover.

Even if a fire alarm system is not explicitly required, it can still be a good idea to install one. It offers additional protection for human life and property and can minimize production losses.

Excursus: In private housing, there is an obligation to install smoke alarms in bedrooms and escape routes. However, these so-called smoke alarms are not the same as fire alarm systems, which are generally used in public buildings, industrial buildings, healthcare facilities and accommodation facilities.

In a nutshell:

When is a fire alarm system mandatory?

A fire alarm system is mandatory if this is required by building regulations, permits or insurance conditions. However, it can be a sensible investment in fire protection even if it is not legally required.

The requirements for fire alarm systems vary depending on the type of building and its use. They are defined by standards, guidelines and regulations. It is therefore essential to take these regulations into account during the planning process in order to ensure optimum protection for people and property.
