Hold-open Device for Fire Doors - Consultation, Installation & Maintenance

The hold-open device is a system for holding fire doors open. In other words, a hold-open device (also called a hold-open system, or FSA for short) holds the fire door open and closes it automatically in the event of a fire. This means fire doors remain open during normal daily operation, while being closed automatically in the event of a fire to prevent the rapid spread of smoke and fire. This guarantees a reliable closure. It should be noted that only hold-open devices approved by the DIBt (German Institute for Building Technology) may be used for fire doors.

The hold-open device for fire doors is available in various versions:

  • Electromagnetic holder system: If smoke is detected, the magnet's electrical circuit is interrupted and the fire door closes automatically. Commonly used, for example, in schools, workshops, or production areas.
  • Integrated door closer: The hold-open device is built into a sliding track and has a visually appealing design. When smoke is detected, the door closes automatically.
  • Overhead door closer: The hold-open device is fitted to a single-leaf or double-leaf fire door with an integrated smoke detector. The door can be opened with minimal effort. As an alternative to the hold-open device, a free-swing mechanism can be installed, which ensures the fire door operates smoothly, similar to an interior room door. This is often used in senior care homes, hospitals, or schools.

A hold-open device consists of various components. The FSA can be purchased as single-leaf or double-leaf (with door coordinator/closing sequence control for double-leaf doors) and, optionally, with a linkage arm, sliding track, or electromagnet. Closing speed, opening damping, closing force, and hold-open angle can all be individually adjusted.

Hold-open devices are approved by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). Acceptance testing is carried out by a manufacturer-certified specialist from CWS. We are happy to advise you on all topics relating to fire doors and hold-open devices.

Maintenance of hold-open devices: In accordance with DIN 14677, a safety inspection and maintenance of a hold-open device must be carried out by a qualified specialist every 12 months.
