Drinking Water Separation Station
A drinking water separation station protects the drinking water from contamination while simultaneously ensuring the firefighting water supply. It prevents the backflow of potentially contaminated water and is therefore essential for firefighting water systems.
Why Is a Drinking Water Separation Station Necessary?
Firefighting water systems are only used in the event of a fire. As a result, the water often remains in the pipes for extended periods, which promotes the growth of dangerous bacteria such as Legionella. These can be life-threatening: according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 5% to 15% of those affected die from legionellosis. Installing a drinking water separation station is mandatory to eliminate this risk.
Legal Requirements for Drinking Water Separation Stations
The installation of a drinking water separation station (also known as a firefighting water transfer station) is legally required for both new buildings and existing buildings with hydrants or firefighting systems. This is regulated by, among others:
the Drinking Water Ordinance
DIN 1988-600 (Technical rules for drinking water installations - Part 600: Drinking water installations in connection with fire-extinguishing and fire protection systems)
Important note: Non-compliance with the Drinking Water Ordinance results in liability for the operator for possible consequences such as illness or death. A grandfathering provision for older buildings does not exist!
Steps for Installing a Drinking Water Separation Station
The following measures are required for safe implementation:
On-site assessment of the firefighting water system
Planning of the safety separation station, taking into account legal requirements and existing deficiencies
Compliant adaptation of the firefighting water supply
Preparation of documentation, support during the expert inspection, and operator briefing
Annual maintenance of the firefighting water system - including the drinking water separation station - in accordance with applicable standards and regulations
