A fire alarm system (FAS, also called an FAS system) is connected to various fire detectors. It warns of smoke and fire at an early stage, and has a connection to the local fire brigade. Manual call points (red push buttons) as well as automatic fire detectors (e.g. smoke detectors) send information to the fire alarm control panel (FACP) in the event of a fire. This triggers the alert to the local fire brigade, internal alerting, as well as possible fire-case control functions. Fire-case control functions are responsible, for example, for opening smoke vents, closing fire barriers, and other fire protection equipment.

Fire alarm systems are preferably used in industrial buildings and commercial facilities, as well as in all applications subject to building regulatory requirements for special structures.

Requirements for the Fire Alarm System

The requirement for a fire alarm system arises from the building permit or the fire protection concept. The FAS is installed in accordance with the requirements of DIN 14675 (design and operation of fire alarm systems) as well as DIN VDE 0833-1/2 (hazard alarm systems).

Testing, Inspection, and Maintenance of a Fire Alarm System

A fire alarm system must be accepted by an approved inspector following installation. In addition, the following intervals must be observed:

• Visual inspection: every 3 months, checking for contamination and damage to fire alarm components, structural changes, and changes to the surrounding conditions.
• Inspection: to be carried out at least once per quarter per DIN 14675, by a specialist company.
• Maintenance: required at least once a year per DIN 14675, by a specialist company.
• Recurring inspection: required at least every 3 years by an approved inspector, per the TPrüfV (Technical Inspection Ordinance). 

All events must be documented by keeping a logbook.
