Sprinkler extinguishing system

Sprinkler systems are among the most classic and widely used stationary fire extinguishing systems. They operate fully automatically according to a proven functional principle: a network of pressurised pipes and sprinklers reliably covers all areas of the building that need to be protected. In the event of a fire, the sprinkler system extinguishes the fire with water in a targeted manner.

Each sprinkler is sealed by a coloured, liquid-filled glass tube which, depending on the individual settings, triggers at a temperature between 57 °C and 340 °C. The trigger temperature of the sprinkler system is usually set at around 30 °C above the maximum expected room temperature. Only the sprinklers at which a critical temperature rise is actually detected react. The affected glass tubes shatter and release the pressurised extinguishing water. This flows through the sprinkler, hits the spray plate and is finely distributed from there to effectively wet the affected area. At the same time, the flow of water automatically activates alarm devices.

Areas of application for sprinkler systems

Sprinkler systems are widely used in public buildings, retail outlets, office buildings, high-rise buildings, underground car parks, logistics areas, high-bay warehouses, industrial plants, museums, congress and conference centres, and other properties with increased fire protection requirements.

Types of sprinkler systems

• Wet systems: These are under constant water pressure, enabling immediate extinguishing. They should only be used in areas where there is no risk of frost.
• Dry systems: The pipe network is permanently pressurised with compressed air or nitrogen, as specified by the manufacturer. These are ideal for areas at risk of frost.
• Pre-action dry systems: This variant only activates when the fire alarm system is also activated. This prevents extinguishing water from escaping immediately in the event of accidental damage to a sprinkler. Pre-action systems are ideal for particularly sensitive areas.

All variants can be equipped with different types of sprinklers, such as dome sprinklers, sidewall sprinklers or ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) sprinklers.
